by | Jul 31, 2024 | Industry Trends

The UEFA Euro 2024 football tournament held in Germany was filled with excitement, talented teams and passionate fans.

The competition gave us a full month of international European football at its top level.

With eventual victors Spain lifting the famous European trophy, many NPAW clients provided streaming video coverage of the tournament. With data gathered from NPAW Video Analytics, we now highlight the top streaming video metrics and insights throughout the tournament.

From June 14th to July 14th, we saw the top 32 teams in Europe compete for the coveted European Cup. With several NPAW clients broadcasted matches from the Euros, this enabled us to give a detailed summary of the performances from 51 matches.

Dates: June 14th – July 14th (except for June 27th, 28th and July 3rd, 4th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 13th), for a total of 51 games.

Tournament Highlights

Daily Average Plays

Comparing the daily average during the EURO Cup days to the daily average of the 90 days prior, the Audience KPIs increased by an average of 11%. This means that this event did not have a huge impact on the overall programming of streaming video providers during these days. A possible reason could be that football is usually consumed by a very specific audience.

The amount of minutes watched decreased on average by 5% versus the previous 90 days.

Peak Days

The behavior of peak days during the EURO Cup varied per match’s stages.

For NPAW clients broadcasting the matches, the days with the highest number of plays were during the quarter-final stage, July 5th followed by July 6th. These were 1.5x times the number of plays compared to the average of other tournament days. The quarter-finals involved major countries including Spain, Germany, France, the Netherlands and England.

The day with the lowest number of plays was the first day, June 14th, twice as low as the total average.

Devices
Set-top-boxes and TVs were the most dominant devices with 88% of Playtime. TVs recorded 47%, while STBs had 41% of plays. This confirms that a significant portion of viewers prefer to watch the live sports event on their television screens, aligning with the traditional viewing experience. Smartphones accounted for 6%, followed by PCs with 5% of plays.
