NPAW: H1 2023 Video Streaming Industry Report, user engagement makes a comeback

NPAW, the global leader in business intelligence for video services, has released its 2024 Video Streaming Industry Report.

Global Quality improved in most metrics for both VOD and Linear TV

For Video-on-Demand (VoD), Buffer Ratio (%), Bitrate and Avg. Join Time all showed improvements over 2023. The significant shift seen was in buffer ratio – a decrease of 35%. This points to a genuine global improvement in quality and infrastructure across OTT platforms, telco and broadcasters. Linear TV Buffer Ratio also decreased by 31% on average across all regions, indicating a substantial improvement in global quality.

We did, however, see some slight declines in engagement across most regions, compared to 2023. Only the Pacific region showed increases in Average Playtime per User in both VoD and LinearTV viewing.

“The 2024 insights show that streaming platforms have seen mixed results in engagement and quality. Video-on-demand (VOD) Playtime per User has dipped slightly, with fewer titles watched. Despite lower engagement, quality metrics improved significantly. Linear TV remained steady, and quality improvements were even more significant. Despite some engagement declines, overall streaming quality is at its best.” said Ferran G. Vilaró, NPAW CEO & Co-Founder.
